Unlike a traditional split A/C, a packaged air conditioning system houses all of the heating and cooling components (condenser, compressor, evaporator coil) in a single outdoor cabinet. They work in the same way central air conditioning does, except the outside unit is connected to both the return and supply ducts.
Because all components of a packaged rooftop air conditioning are outside, it frees up space inside. With traditional split central air systems, the air handler and evaporator coil are located in a separate cabinet inside — usually in the attic, crawlspace, or utility closet. But some homes simply don’t have the space to spare! A packaged unit can be installed on the rooftop (more common with businesses) or a concrete pad on the back or side of the home.
